Salutations and closures

Letters begin and end in set ways:

SALUTATIONS

CLOSURES

Dear Mr …,
OR
Dear Ms …,
(Note no full stop after Mr, Ms or Dr)

Yours sincerely,

  • It is best to use the name of the person being written to, rather than Sir or Madam, if possible.
  • Note that the second word in Yours sincerely and Yours faithfully does not have a capital letter.
