Assignment preparation task 7: Developing paragraphs

Have a hard look at the way you habitually construct paragraphs. Observe:

• where you tend to place topic sentences;
• if you build in controlling ideas;
• if your paragraphs have a pattern of organization, or logical development and flow, supported by appropriate transitional words and markers.

For the writing sample that you’re working with for Assignment 1A, consider each of the paragraphs in your sample and try to indicate where the controlling ideas and topic sentences are in each paragraph. Can you say whether your writing takes a direct or indirect approach?
