Activity 20: Avoiding discriminatory language

Rewrite the following sentences, in more appropriate language.

Sentence 1

A doctor will be hired to help probationers evaluate cases and he will be expected to conduct training also.

Your sentence

A doctor will be hired to help probationers evaluate cases and he or she will also be expected to conduct training.

Or simply:

A doctor will be hired to help probationers evaluate cases and to conduct training.

Sentence 2

If a supervisor dresses well, he presents a positive image to his subordinates.

Your sentence

If supervisors dress well, they present a positive image to their subordinates.

Sentence 3

The patients were brought into the interview room and heard their case notes read aloud by an attractive young woman.

Your sentence

The patients were brought into the interview room to hear their case notes read.

Sentence 4

Although he is confined to a wheelchair, my colleague is able to work in this office because it is designed to accommodate the disabled.

Your sentence

My colleague is able to work here because the office is designed to be wheelchair-accessible.
